During HDF 412 I was able to gain knowledge on three distinct aspects of leadership that are crucial to being a successful and credible leader. The class was broken up into three modules, each module had a specific lesson about leadership and situtations a leader will deal with.
Module 1 was all about having a Crucial Conversation. We used to book Crucial Conversations: tools for talking when stakes are high by Patterson.et.al. The book first defined what a crucial conversation was and defined its characteristics, it then went to explain, step by step how exactly to deal with a crucial conversations. In this module I learned that when dealing with a crucial conversation it is important that the both people feel safe, when there is safety there is a higher chance of the coversation having a positive that both participants in the conversations can be happy with.
Module 2 was all about increasing our knowledge pertaning to cultural anthropology. During this module I was introduced to several identity models and theory that explained how people of different backgrounds explored their identities. This module also coverd privilege. I learned that as a male I have privilege. There are certain aspects of my life that I will always have favor in because I am a male. It is important to realize this privilege and advocate and be an ally for those who do not have as much privilege.
Module 3 was all about crisis and the many crisis models and theories that exist. One of my favorite model is James & Wooten's crisis model. What is special about this model is that it gives leaders a reason to be prepared for crisis before they take place. This model also gives steps on how leader should adjourn from a crisis and what actions should be made in order to avoid crisis from happening.
Overall this capston course really helped me develope in the way I think about everyday leadership. Leadership situations that can come up at anytimes. Having crucial conversations is something that can happen at anytime, it could be due to crisis or conflict, it is important fro a leader to be build up his or here cultrual compentence in order to deal with any situation that might arise
